Good, useful comments. But I think a key factor has not been mentioned.
The shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy coinsiding with a GINI increase strikes me as more than a coincidence. That shift in the economy may be the one systemic factor behind the increased inequality. I do not know how to handle that situation. We should explore the situation with an open mind.
